After making a living as a professional musician, Derek Sivers went looking for ways to sell his own CD online and ended up creating CD Baby, once the largest seller of independent music on the web with over $100M in sales for over 150,000 musician clients. When Derek Sivers started CD Baby, he wasn’t planning on building a major business. He was a successful independent musician who just wanted to sell his CDs online. When no one would help him do it, he set out on his own and built an online store from scratch.

He started in 1998 by helping his friends sell their CDs. In 2000, he hired his first employee. Eight years later, he sold CD Baby for $22 million.

Sivers didn’t need a business plan, and neither do you. You don’t need to think big; in fact, it’s better if you don’t. Start with what you have, care about your customers more than yourself, and run your business like you don’t need the money.

##序言不假,確實compact到一個小時能讀完,跟我個人想瞭很久的philosophy契閤。這種堅持不最大要做小的理念本身是為瞭讓個人更自由,但投放到韆萬小淘寶店賣傢跟文藝糕點、奶茶店的創業點子上,會感嘆還是個人意識跟行業局限。見過很多秀氣小眾的淘寶店,一個人經營,一圈忠實顧客綫下能成朋友的關係,但更多的是被利益驅動的焦頭爛額,真正能抵達目標的隻是少數。 You can’t please everyone, so proudly exclude people. 大部分人賺錢都是基於幫助他人,可我們習慣付費就抵消瞭對方的付齣,因此很難維持那種感恩跟成就感,賺錢花錢都痛苦,其實偶爾換個視角看看挺好的。
