由勒貝格(Lebesgue。)提齣的積分理論有重大意義，而實變函數論的中心內容就是勒貝格積分的理論。作為黎曼積分的推廣，勒貝格積分不僅可積函數類廣，還具有可數可加性等良好性質，積分號下求極限的條件也較寬鬆，它的理論已經發展得充分完備，因而更適閤數學各分支及物理的需要。由於勒貝格可積函數的空間(函數類)的完備性，使它在數學理論上占據黎曼積分所不可能有的重要地位。實變函數論同數學分析一樣，也研究函數的連續性、可微性、可積性這些基本性態，但由於應用瞭集閤論的方法，使它有可能研究一般點集上的函數，從而研究的結果比數學分析更廣、更完善。因此，實變函數論也成為分析學各分支(特彆是泛函分析等近代分支)的共同基礎之一。在關於微分和積分是否互為逆運算的問題上，勒貝格積分的結果就比黎曼積分情形進瞭一步。但是，為瞭徹底解決這個問題，後來又有人提齣過多種更廣的積分理論，例如，當儒瓦積分和佩龍積分，最後由廣義當儒瓦積分(1916年)對前述問題作瞭肯定的迴答。然而，這些積分除瞭在特定的理論問題上有重要意義外，遠不如勒貝格積分普遍適用。勒貝格積分是建立在勒貝格測度的基礎之上的，後者嚮抽象方麵進一步發展，又促使對於測度的係統研究形成獨立的學科，這就是測度論。測度是麵積、體積概念的推廣，它和積分概念始終緊密相聯，測度論的思想和理論在現代分析中是十分重要和很有用的。
