作者简介

Roger Penrose is Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at Oxford University. He has received a number of prizes and awards, including the 1988 Wolf Prize for physics, which he shared with Stephen Hawking for their joint contribution to our understanding of the universe. His books include The Emperor's New Mind, Shadows of the Mind, and The Nature of Space and Time, which he wrote with Hawking. He has lectured extensively at universities throughout America. He lives in Oxford.

大赞!看了这本书的一段话立刻就懂了纤维丛的几何概念是如何从流形概念扩展出来的,而之前读微分几何是无论如何也扛不过那些繁复的概念的,Penrose此人很重几何直观,有很多美妙的示意图,很多思想是值得注意的。显然,理论物理或数学研究生以上的读者将从此书得到最大的益处。因为本书展示的是物理和数学的相互交织,其他领域的读者没有必要啃此书了。

三一学院的巨庭,中间是一个喷泉。三一学院的整个建筑群在17世纪初时进行过大规模的整修,这是在当时的院长托马斯·纳维尔(Thomas Nevile)的亲自设计主持下完成的。整个宏伟的建筑设计方案包括将古老的钟楼移动20码,以空出足够的空间来建造巨庭(The Great Court)一个哥特风格的庭院。

巴罗是牛顿的老师,1673年他在担任三一学院的院长时,为三一学院主持建造了几百年后被联合国评定为世界文化遗产的莱恩图书馆。图书馆屋顶上伫立着由加布里尔设计的四尊石雕,分别象征着四门最古老的学科:神学、法学、物理学和数学。而另一位建筑大师莱恩则设计了图书馆的整体构架,如今我们看到的古朴而又独具匠心的书架、书桌和书托全都出自于他的构思,图书馆也因他而得名。
