As all three are drawn into a love triangle filled with sensuality, subtlety, and betrayal, Archer faces a harrowing choice between happiness and the social code that has ruled his life. The resulting tale of thwarted love is filled with irony and surprise, struggle and acceptance. Recipient of the first Pulitzer Prize for fiction ever awarded to a woman, this great novel paints a timeless portrait of "society" still unmatched in American literature—an arbitrary, capricious social elite that professes inviolable standards but readily abandons them for greed and desire.

The upper stratum of New York society into which Edith Wharton was born in 1862 provided her with an abundance of material as a novelist but did not encourage her growth as an artist. Educated by tutors and governesses, she was raised for only one career: marriage. But her marriage, in 1885, to Edward Wharton was an emotional disappointment, if not a disaster. She suffered the first of a series of nervous breakdowns in 1894. In spite of the strain of her marriage, or perhaps because of it, she began to write fiction and published her first story in 1889.

Her first published book was a guide to interior decorating, but this was followed by several novels and story collections. They were written while the Whartons lived in Newport and New York, traveled in Europe, and built their grand home, The Mount, in Lenox, Massachusetts. In Europe, she met Henry James, who became her good friend, traveling companion, and the sternest but most careful critic of her fiction. The House of Mirth (1905) was both a resounding critical success and a bestseller, as was Ethan Frome (1911). In 1913 the Whartons were divorced, and Edith took up permanent residence in France. Her subject, however, remained America, especially the moneyed New York of her youth. Her great satiric novel, The Custom of the Country was published in 1913 and The Age of Innocence won her the Pulitzer Prize in 1921.

In her later years, she enjoyed the admiration of a new generation of writers, including Sinclair Lewis and F. Scott Fitzgerald. In all, she wrote some thirty books, including an autobiography. A Backwards Glance (1934). She died at her villa near Paris in 1937.,,

利奥•洛文塔尔是享誉大西洋两岸的批判理论家、文学社会学家和传播理论家。作为社会研究所的核心成员之一，他在一生的学术研究中，始终把法兰克福学派的批判理论应用于文学、文化和社会问题的分析研究，在文学理论、通俗文化理论和批判传播理论等方面都做出了一定贡献。他的文学研究不仅给我们提供了一种重要的观察当今文学现象的新视角，丰富了人们对文学的本质和特征的理解，而且有效地把批判理论、文学理论和传播理论综合起来，“扭转了当时的研究立场，在文化社会学领域发动了一场哥白尼式的革命”， 成为批判的文化研究的先驱和跨学科研究的典范。 　　但是，作为“法兰克福学派在制度上存在的中心人物”、作为“研究所成员中对大众文化分析最广的人”， 洛文塔尔在汉语学术界却并没有受到应有的重视。与法兰克福学派的其他三位主将——西奥多•阿多诺、赫伯特•马尔库塞和瓦尔特•本雅明比起来，洛文塔尔确实是“被人不公平地冷落了的人物”。 “拿来”是有选择性的，二十世纪八九十年代我国在引进法兰克福学派的理论时，之所以着力引进以阿多诺为代表的大众文化批判理论，对洛文塔尔的通俗文学理论和文学传播理论却视而不见，主要是因为当时这两个问题还没有成为亟需解决的理论问题，而当时大众文化在中国的风行及其影响问题则是学术界所要迫切解决的重大理论问题。如今，中国社会也开始步入消费社会、媒介社会，通俗文艺日益成为文学艺术的主导形态，通俗文化研究和文学传播研究已经成为我们进行文学研究所不容忽视的一个课题，从这个角度来看，“拿来”洛文塔尔的相关理论可谓正逢其时。在跨文化视野中保持清醒的中国问题意识，应该是我们当前践行“拿来主义”的基本原则之一。 　　本书是洛文塔尔的一本论文集，第一版是由普伦蒂斯—霍尔出版公司（Prentice-Hall， Englewood Cliffs, N. J.）于1961年出版的。本译文依据的是太平洋图书公司（Pacific Books, Palo Alto, California）1968年的版本。文集收入的文章写于二十世纪三十年代到六十年代初，分别发表在《美国社会学杂志》、《国际社会科学杂志》等期刊和文集中。尽管作者关注的核心问题始终如一，但是由于时间跨度很长，世事变迁，作者的境遇和工作屡有变动，看问题的视角、态度和研究方法当然也会有所变化。读者稍加留意，就会发现他和阿多诺其实分别代表了法兰克福学派中对待大众文化的两种不同态度、研究视角和方法。从中，我们会看到法兰克福学派批判理论的“另一副面孔”，这对于完整、科学地理解法兰克福学派当是具有一定意义的。 　　另外，作者在导论中介绍了各篇文章的缘起及其写作时间，并且在每一篇文章的脚注也都做了说明，这为理解文章的内容和价值提供了具体的历史语境，也是值得注意的。例如《大众偶像的胜利》一文，曾以《通俗杂志中的传记》为题，发表在保罗•拉扎斯菲尔德和弗兰克•斯坦顿主编的《电台研究：1942—1943》上，出版时间是1944年。由此可见作者的理论洞察力、内容分析能力及其研究方法的科学性。作者不但为我们呈现了第二次世界大战这一艰难时期的典型形象——“消费偶像”，而且揭示了消费社会在发达资本主义国家的来临（洛文塔尔是“消费社会”的第一批预言家和研究者之一）。再如《文学和社会》一文，曾以《文学社会学》为题，发表在威尔伯•施拉姆主编的《现代社会中的传播》一书上，出版时间是1948年，而该文的第一稿写于1932年。这说明洛文塔尔在三十年代就已经开始关注文学传播问题了，并且尝试着从“传播”入手来解开文学转型之谜，从而与本雅明等理论家一起揭开了西方文学研究的传播学转向的序幕。 　　译者认为，洛文塔尔把文学放在文学与传播的“力场”中来揭示文学的本质和功能，从传播的角度对文学进行规定的文学观念，可以说是一种传播论的文学观。这种观点认为，文学活动必须在更具包容性的文化和社会理论中被调查。文学研究不仅要包括它的传播者、文本和接受者，而且要包括它的文化语境、社会过程和经济关系。洛文塔尔提醒他的读者在解释文学是怎样存在于它们的传播语境时，一定要注意总体观念的重要性。他不但拒绝把社会因素孤立起来，而且把个体表达、传播媒介、文化制度和社会制度以及政治模式都编织到一个独特的网络之中，从而建构了“传播力场”这一由复杂的传播现象所构成的动态结构。在从理论上阐述了“传播力场”的生成机制与构成要素之后，洛文塔尔依次梳理了传播媒介、作家、书商（包括出版商和分销商）、批评家、读者和传播渠道等各种“力”在文学“传播力场”中的角色及其相互关系的历史变迁；并且分析了传播者与文本建构，期待视野与文本结构，文学“传播力场”的历史变迁与文学转型等问题。在他看来，机械印刷传播方式催生的包括“职业作家”在内的新型传播主体，对文本的建构产生了根本性影响。阅读大众的出现则是文学传播世界发生决定性改变的另一个根源，它不但引发了持续至今的
