当今的生物数学仍处于探索和发展阶段。生物数学的许多方法和理论还很不完善,它的应用虽然取得某些成功,但仍是低水平的、粗略的、甚至是勉强的。许多更复杂的生物学问题至今未能找到相应的数学方法进行研究。因此,生物数学还要从生物学的需要和特点,探求新方法、新手段和新的理论体系,还有待发展和完善。数学模型是能够表现和描述真实世界某些现象、特征和状况的数学系统。数学模型能定量地描述生命物质运动的过程,一个复杂的生物学问题借助数学模型能转变成一个数学问题,通过对数学模型的逻辑推理、求解和运算,就能够获得客观事物的有关结论,达到对生命现象进行研究的目的。

不连续数学方法还表现在对连续方法的补充。微积分学的基本理论指出,函数的可微性蕴涵着连续性。因此以微分运算为基础的数学模型都是连续的。这些模型只能适用于连续变化范围,对于连续函数出现不连续点或奇点(包括导函数不连续点)情形,将无能为力。而恰恰在这些破坏了连续性的区域,却常常是生物学需要研究的课题。
