THESIS/DISSERTATION
I learned from a thesis about dissertations that students were first required to write them before the end of the 18th century in German universities. In my opinion （ and I am not alone in this） ， the thesis in its present form is a huge waste of time. In this I have the support of W.Malcolm Reid， who raised five objections to the dissertation： （i） it is not a useful tool in scientific communication， （ii） the writing skills in thesis writing are not those required for publication， （iii） its length has become excessive and discouraging， （iv） it has no standard format， and （v） when unpublished， it represents a failure in the training system for PhDs. As a teacher of writing for publication， I am particularly angry about the second objection. I find that I have to help doctoral students to UNLEARN the writing skills they developed while writing a thesis. For example： the thesis must be as long as possible， while the manuscript must be concise; the thesis must contain every little thing the candidate did， while the manuscript must contain only novel and important findings; the thesis introduction must reference everything published in the topic since the invention of writing，while the manuscript introduction should contain only enough information for the reader to understand why the project was done.

竟然是英语版的。。。。。

　　 霍普金斯的这两本书，分别写于1923年（《科学的广告》）和1927年（《我的广告生涯》）。而第一部在实验室诞生的电视机始于1925年，于是在这两本历史悠久的广告书中，我们看不到任何有关电视广告的信息，更别说互联网。充斥着书中案例的只是原始的促销、邮寄、报纸、刊物广告。但奇怪的是，阅读此书，丝毫感觉不到那种久远的年代感——媒介是旧的，但理念日久常新。我想这大概便是作者用“科学”二字去形容广告的奥秘所在，鉴于万年不变的人性法则，要影响大众心理，总是有路可循。
