Oxford University Press (OUP) is the largest university press in the world. It is a department of the University of Oxford and is governed by a group of 15 academics appointed by the Vice-Chancellor known as the Delegates of the Press. 有了文字，首先需要寻找写刻的材料。最早书写材料都取自于自然界，如：石块、树皮、树叶、兽皮、兽骨及动物的甲壳等等，都是其例。但这些材料，各有缺陷，无法充分发挥文字的纪录功能。春秋战国时代，知识日渐普及，着书立说，大行其道，为应需要，简书和帛书乃相继产生。「简」是用竹或木制成狭长的条片，书写时，由上而下，一片一片接续下来，然後再依顺序由右而左的排列，并以绳索加以编连，这样一部著作，便能连贯而完整。帛书是丝织品写成的图书，由于帛性柔软又轻便，携带及阅读均感便利。只是简书笨重，帛书昂贵，都不利于知识的普及及图书的长期发展，因而人们又发明纸张来取代它们。

然而无论生产图书方法如何改变，其基本原理，却都脱离不了旧日的方式。今日制版、印刷、造纸等制作图书要件，可以说无一不是从国人旧有的发明中蜕变而来的。所以当我们缅怀人类文明的进步及图书发展的历史时，总难抑制住一股无名的兴奋与荣耀的心情。当然，如何自励自省，绍续先人光辉遗绪，或将更具有意义。
