Oxford University Press (OUP) is the largest university press in the world. It is a department of the University of Oxford and is governed by a group of 15 academics appointed by the Vice-Chancellor known as the Delegates of the Press. They are headed by the Secretary to the Delegates, who serves as OUP's chief executive and as its major representative on other university bodies. Oxford University has used a similar system to oversee the Press since the 17th century.

对口袋书没有完全准确的界定，大抵是指开本小于小32开，印张大致不超过10个印张的书。口袋书的兴起，最早可以追溯到1935年7月在伦敦出版的“企鹅丛书”，这套丛书3年间销售2500多万册，获得巨大成功。口袋书从此流行于世并引发了一场“纸皮书革命”，对欧美国家的出版业产生了深远的影响，甚至与美国发明柯达克罗姆彩色胶片一起列入20世纪的人类发明、人类冒险和不寻常的事件当中。

雕版印刷术约在初、盛唐时代出现，由于它是手工业时代生产图书的好方法，因此很快被推广利用，成为五代、两宋以後生产图书的主力。为了使印刷技术更便捷与美观，宋仁宗庆历年间（公元一○四一～一○四八）又有人发明活字排版印刷。而元朝末年，更进步到彩色套印的印刷领域。从此之后，印刷技术不但成熟周全，印刷成品更是鲜丽动人。

纸的出现，约在西汉时期，史书正式的纪录是公元一○五年。由于纸张具有轻柔及低廉的长处，因而，很快的成为生产图书最主要的材料。纸出现以后，虽然解决了图书生产方面的许多问题，但是生产图书，犹停留在逐字逐本的抄写，既费时又费力，还是欠缺方便。人们遂从长期使用印章和捶拓碑碣文字的经验中，启发了雕版与印刷技术的结合使用，便捷快速的生产图书方法，终于发明。以古法示范造纸过程。

图书除了文字、纸张、印刷之外，如何装潢？也是要件之一。自竹木简策之後，中国图书的装潢技巧，即不断的改良提升，其演进的方向，大都朝向简便实用、美观大方的原则。历代以来，图书装潢型制约有：卷轴、册叶、经摺装、蝴蝶装、包背装、线装等多种演进过程。近代的图书，虽然采机械操作装订成平装、精装等形式，但有些影印出版的古书，还常用线条来增加古意，颇能引发思古之幽情。在中国早期即有了护书用的铜制护套。
