Oxford University Press (OUP) is the largest university press in the world. It is a department of the University of Oxford and is governed by a group of 15 academics appointed by the Vice-Chancellor known as the Delegates of the Press. They are headed by the Secretary to the Delegates, who serves as OUP's chief executive and as its major representative on other university bodies. 圖書除瞭文字、紙張、印刷之外，如何裝潢？也是要件之一。自竹木簡策之後，中國圖書的裝潢技巧，即不斷的改良提升，其演進的方嚮，大都朝嚮簡便實用、美觀大方的原則。曆代以來，圖書裝潢型製約有：捲軸、冊葉、經摺裝、蝴蝶裝、包背裝、綫裝等多種演進過程。近代的圖書，雖然采機械操作裝訂成平裝、精裝等形式，但有些影印齣版的古書，還常用綫條來增加古意，頗能引發思古之幽情。在中國早期即有瞭護書用的銅製護套。

有瞭文字，首先需要尋找寫刻的材料。最早書寫材料都取自於自然界，如：石塊、樹皮、樹葉、獸皮、獸骨及動物的甲殼等等，都是其例。但這些材料，各有缺陷，無法充分發揮文字的紀錄功能。春鞦戰國時代，知識日漸普及，著書立說，大行其道，為應需要，簡書和帛書乃相繼産生。「簡」是用竹或木製成狹長的條片，書寫時，由上而下，一片一片接續下來，然後再依順序由右而左的排列，並以繩索加以編連，這樣一部著作，便能連貫而完整。帛書是絲織品寫成的圖書，由於帛性柔軟又輕便，攜帶及閱讀均感便利。隻是簡書笨重，帛書昂貴，都不利於知識的普及及圖書的長期發展，因而人們又發明紙張來取代它們。

紙的齣現，約在西漢時期，史書正式的紀錄是公元一○五年。由於紙張具有輕柔及低廉的長處，因而，很快的成為生産圖書最主要的材料。紙齣現以後，雖然解決瞭圖書生産方麵的許多問題，但是生産圖書，猶停留在逐字逐本的抄寫，既費時又費力，還是欠缺方便。人們遂從長期使用印章和捶拓碑碣文字的經驗中，啓發瞭雕版與印刷技術的結閤使用，便捷快速的生産圖書方法，終於發明。以古法示範造紙過程。
