作者簡介

Syd Hoff was born and raised in New York City. He studied at the National Academy of Design and sold his first cartoon to The New Yorker when he was eighteen. He eventually became one of the most original and beloved authors and illustrators of children's books. Mr. Hoff wrote more than fifty books for children, including the I Can Read titles Danny and the Dinosaur, Oliver, and Sammy the Seal.

"After a long sea voyage, Oliver the elephant gets off the boat and learns that he doesn't have a job in the circus. He heads out seeking employment first at the zoo and then as a peanut vendor. Neither works out, so he tries being a pet. Finally Oliver heads to the park where he meets a group of kids. After playing awhile, they all contemplate what they would like to do. Oliver, who wants to be a dancing elephant, starts to strut his stuff. He is so good that people don't pay attention to the passing circus parade. Finally Oliver gets the job that he wants and deserves. The text is simple and the illustrations are a delight, but the book is a bit long for kids just starting to read. 大象，英文Elephant，長鼻目，象科。通稱象，是現存世界最大的陸生動物，平均每天能消耗75~150韆剋植物。盡管有一個巨型的胃和19米長的腸子，但是它的消化能力卻相當差。它們主要外部特徵為柔韌而肌肉發達的長鼻和扇大的耳朵，具纏捲的功能，是象自衛和取食的有力工具。長鼻目僅有象科1科共2屬3種，即亞洲象和非洲象以及非洲森林象。亞洲象曆史上曾廣布於中國長江以南(最遠曾達到河南省)的南亞和東南亞地區，喜歡群居，現分布範圍已縮小，主産於印度、泰國、柬埔寨、越南等國。中國雲南省西雙版納地區也有小的野生種群。非洲象和非洲森林象則廣泛分布於整個撒哈拉以南的非洲大陸,喜歡群居。 　　亞洲象肩約2.3-3.5米，體重4～8噸，非洲象肩高3.2-4.2米，體重5-11噸，非洲森林象平均肩高不超過2.6米，體重3.5-5.5噸。象頭大，耳大如扇。四肢粗大如圓柱，支持巨大身體，膝關節不能自由屈麯。鼻長幾乎與體長相等，呈圓筒狀，伸屈自如；鼻孔開口在末端，鼻尖有指狀突起，能揀拾細物。上頜具1對發達門齒，終生生長，非洲象門齒可長達3.3米，亞洲象雌性長牙不外露；上、下頜每側均具 6個頰齒，自前嚮後依次生長，具高齒冠，結構復雜。每足5趾，但第1.第5趾發育不全。被毛稀疏，體色淺灰褐色。雄象睾丸隱於腹腔內；雌象前腿後有2個乳頭，妊娠期長達 600多天（22個月），一般每胎1仔。非洲象長鼻末端有2個指狀突起，亞洲象僅具1個；非洲象耳大，體型較大，亞洲象耳小，身體較小，體重較輕。
