學必須依靠語言作為唯一的傳達信息的方法,並且在傳達中,在無歧義性問題具有最大的重要性的地方,邏輯形式必須起它們的作用。在這點上,特徵性的睏難可以描述如下。在自然科學中,我們試圖從一般導齣特殊,試圖理解由簡單的普遍規律引起的特殊現象。用語言錶述的普遍規律隻能包含少量簡單的概念——否則規律將不是簡單和普遍的瞭。從這些概念要推導齣無限多樣性的可能現象,不僅是定性地,而且要在每一個細節上都以完全的準確性推導齣來。顯然,日常語言的概念,既然它們是不準確的並且是模糊地定義的,就決不能允許作這樣的推導。當從既定的前提導齣判斷的鏈條時,鏈條中可能有的環的數目依賴於前提的準確性。由此可見,自然科學中普遍規律的概念必須以完全的準確性規定下來,而這隻有用數學的抽象方法纔能做到。
