The subject mater is primarily an expansion of the Mathematical Preliminaries section in Knuths c1assic Art of Computer Programming, but the style of presentation is more leisurely, and individual topics are covered more deeply. Several new topics have been added, and the most significant ideas have been traced to their historical roots. The book includes more than 500 exercises, divided into six categories. Complete answers are provided for all exercises, except research problems, making the book particularly valuable for self-study.

Oren Patashnik 著名计算机科学家，BibTeX的创始人之一，是位于拉荷亚的通信研究中心的研究员。他1976年毕业于耶鲁大学，后来在斯坦福大学师从Knuth，1980年就职于贝尔实验室。1985年与Leslie Lamport合作创建了BibTeX（LaTeX的一种工具，用于管理文献、产生文献目录）。
