The subject mater is primarily an expansion of the Mathematical Preliminaries section in Knuths c1assic Art of Computer Programming, but the style of presentation is more leisurely, and individual topics are covered more deeply. Several new topics have been added, and the most significant ideas have been traced to their historical roots. The book includes more than 500 exercises, divided into six categories. Complete answers are provided for all exercises, except research problems, making the book particularly valuable for self-study.

Ronald L. Graham（葛立恒）著名數學傢，美國加州大學聖迭戈分校計算機與信息科學專業教席（Jacobs Endowed Chair），AT&T實驗室研究中心榮譽首席科學傢，美國數學學會前任主席。Graham於1999年成為美國計算機學會會士，200 3年獲得美國數學學會的斯蒂爾終身成就奬，2012年成為美國數學學會會士。他還曾獲得美國數學學會頒發的Lester R. Ford奬和Carl Allendoerfer奬以及其他眾多奬項。
