Charles Strickland, a conventional stockbroker, abandons his wife and children for Paris and Tahiti, to live his life as a painter. Whilst his betrayal of family, duty and honour gives him the freedom to achieve greatness, his decision leads to an obsession which carries severe implications. Inspired by the life of Paul Gauguin, The Moon and Sixpence is at once a satiric caricature of Edwardian conventions and a vivid portrayal of the mentality of a genius.

作者簡介

William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 and lived in Paris until he was ten. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and at Heidelberg University. He spent some time at St. Thomas' Hospital with the idea of practising medicine, but the success of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, published in 1897, won him over to literature. Of Human Bondage, the first of his masterpieces, came out in 1915, and with the publication in 1919 of The Moon and Sixpence his reputation as a novelist was established. At the same time his fame as a successful playwright and writer was being consolidated with acclaimed productions of various plays and the publication of several short story collections. His other works include travel books, essays, criticism and the autobiographical The Summing Up and A Writer's Notebook. In 1927 Somerset Maugham settled in the South of France and lived there until his death in 1965

一直喜歡安野光雅。這套書真不錯，裏麵有很多有意思的遊戲，最後還都有一個詳盡的說明，解釋瞭書裏遊戲的機關和說明的數學原理，寫的一點都不生澀，我這個特彆害怕數學的成年人看瞭也覺得蠻有意思，是本可以反復看的圖書~厚厚的幾本，很值,安野光雅的書總是很棒，有獨特的視角。一直認為，兒童數學的啓濛不是簡單算個數這麼單調。以遊戲的方式不知不覺中開拓孩子的思維模式，是值得推薦的。以前還買過《壺中的故事》那套，也很棒，不過適閤大點的小朋友。我初略翻瞭一下，裏麵講的不是一些抽象的數學知識，跟我們小學裏的課本還是有區彆的，主要講的還是一些和兒童生活聯係緊密的一些內容，如排列啊，觀察啊，我揣測按照作者的意思，應該是培養孩子的初步的數學思想的。姐姐喜歡沒事時玩兒一種數獨遊戲，都說安野光雅的數學書厲害，我就買瞭這套繪本，準備春節迴傢送給姐姐。經過姐姐同意，我先拆開來一睹為快。這一看就鑽進去瞭。第一次想說，早知道數學這麼有意思，我還怕我爸不成嗎.是朋友介紹來的，真的是很好的書呢，哈哈，小孩子愛看，我也愛看，是玩著做瞭題，本來兒子每天做一百道20以內的數學題，（不到五歲）堅持瞭幾個月，有點不耐煩瞭，用瞭這個書，他又喜歡瞭，並且直接跟我說喜歡這種做數學的方法，哈哈哈，真的很感謝。很棒，咱們中國自己怎麼沒有呢。兒子馬上要上小學瞭，平時對數學興趣不太大，自從買瞭這套書，每天像做遊戲一樣學習數學，在書中感知數字的樂趣。第
