But that feeling oftransformation is in some ways typical， says Rich Tedeschi， a professor of psychologyat the University of North Carolina in Charlotte who coined the term "post-traumaticgrowth". His studies of people who have endured extreme events， like combat， violentcrime or sudden serious illness show that most feel dazed and anxious in the immediateaftermath; they are preoccupied with the idea that their lives have been shattered.A few are haunted long afterward by memory problems， sleep trouble and similarsymptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder7. But Tedeschi and others have found thatfor many people——-perhaps even the majority——life ultimately becomes richer and moregratifying.Something similar happens to many people who experience a terrifying physical threat.In that moment， our sense of invulnerability is pierced， and the self-protective mentalarmor that normally stands between us and our perceptions of the world is torn away.Our everyday life scripts——our habits， self-perceptions and assumptions——go out thewindow， and we are left with a raw experience of the world.

　　《研究生英語綜閤教程》（以下簡稱《綜閤教程》）為“高等學校研究生英語提高係列教材”之一，依據《非英語專業研究生英語教學大綱》的要求，基於廣泛而深入的調研，充分考慮與大學本科階段的銜接，根據研究生英語教學特點進行設計和編寫，旨在通過說、讀、寫、譯等技能的綜閤訓練，提高研究生閱讀、翻譯和寫作的能力。《綜閤教程》包含上、下兩冊，內容難度和學習重點有所不同，可用於研究生階段兩個學期的英語教學，也可由教師根據學生的實際水平選擇使用。《綜閤教程》每冊包含10個單元，每單元的說、讀、寫、譯活動圍繞一個特定主題展開.這樣的設計有助於增強學生在語篇層次上的說、讀、寫、譯能力，提高他們對所讀材料的分析判斷和歸納總結能力，以及用英語就某一話題錶達觀點的能力。《綜閤教程》遵循“讀寫結閤，以讀寫促說”的原則，保證教學過程中語言輸入豐富準確，輸齣活動形式多樣，有效提高學生的語言理解與錶達能力。本教程的課堂教學活動經過精心設計，使學生在理解課文的基礎上能用目標語錶達對主題的理解，並能進一步就主題進行討論。
　　《綜閤教程》課文選用瞭真實的語言素材，讓學生接觸真實環境下的英語。在閱讀文章前，教材設計瞭以任務為中心、生動有趣的口語熱身活動。在閱讀文章後，設計瞭閱讀理解練習以及基於文章理解的思考討論題。教師用書中提供瞭口語活動的操作指導、語言提示，以及一些備用的課堂口語活動和討論話題，這不僅方便瞭教師的教學，而且能夠滿足不同程度學生的需求，使盡可能多的學生參與到討論活動中。
