　　全國大學英語四級考試在不斷改革，2005年6月起，從傳統的題型變為新題型，總分變為710分，閱讀分值從占總分的40％改為35％，聽力則從以前的20％擴大到35％。2008年1 2月20日實行大學英語四級“機考”試點。機考增加瞭“跟讀”環節：機器讀一句，考生跟讀一句，以此考查考生的口語水平。有這樣一種說法，采用機考後，題型將發生很大變化，以聽力為基礎的考題占四級考試的70％，閱讀比例占到30％。占70％的聽力中，聽力理解和綜閤聽力各占25％和45％。綜閤聽力主要為跟讀、聽寫、結構、拼寫以及寫作。寫作的模式是考生先聽一段聽力材料，再根據材料的要求進行寫作。
　　鑒於上述改革趨勢，本書在編寫過程中本著滿足710分新題型和機考需求的原則和思路，以全新的理念，讓受死記硬背單詞摺磨的學生進入一個嶄新的世界——在訓練聽、讀、譯三項技能的同時，牢固記住大學英語四級詞匯。

　　根據教育部高等教育司公布的《大學英語課程教學要求》一書中的《大學英語參考詞匯錶》，本書共收錄一般要求規定的4，794個單詞{含中學已學詞匯），並將《大學英語詞組錶》部分詞組編入書內。編者在編寫過程中，通過詞頻統計和排序核查，對本書的詞匯量進行瞭統計，最終達到《大學英語課程教學要求》要求掌握的詞匯量。
