这是近年来读到的为数不多的好书。有时候文字很好，但故事非常一般，而这本恰恰是既有故事又有文字，非常难得。尤其是前半段作者对自己在大陆期间童年、青年时期读书生活的回忆，非常生动又耐人寻味，可以看到大时代中精英群体的典型的心路历程。不过后半段在台湾教书育人的部分，故事性就欠缺一点。不过自传体的文字毕竟不是小说，年过八十的笔触，是有格外不同的温和内敛，清晰透彻。这世上原来曾经有过这样的中国,曾经有过这样有骨气，有才华的中国知识分子。南开中学的校长、作者的父亲、流亡大学的师生，虽相隔六十多年，也为曾有这样的同胞而自豪。
