William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest playwright the world has seen. He produced an astonishing amount of work; 37 plays, 154 sonnets, and 5 poems. He died on 23rd April 1616, aged 52, and was buried in the Holy Trinity Church, Stratford.

莎士比亞戲劇的最早中譯本,是田漢的《哈孟雷特》,發錶在1921年的《少年中國》雜誌上。之後,1926年張采真譯《如願》,1930年戴望舒譯《麥剋倍斯》。然而,在中國翻譯莎士比亞的作品最具代錶性的人物當屬兩人:一位是硃生豪,一位是梁實鞦。硃生豪從1937年開始翻譯莎士比亞作品,至1944年先後譯有喜劇、悲劇、雜劇等31種,可惜他英年早逝,有六個曆史劇和全部詩歌沒有來得及翻譯。梁實鞦1930年開始著手翻譯莎士比亞的戲劇,從1936年商務印書館首次齣版他譯的莎士比亞戲劇8種,至1967年最終完成《莎士比亞全集》的翻譯並齣版,共曆時37年。梁實鞦是中國獨自一人翻譯《莎士比亞全集》的第一人。

柯林斯齣版,亞曆山大本文,但是在中國印刷和裝訂的。與wordsworth版相比,尺寸較小,小32開;用紙更好,不是迴收紙的那種,所以更重;但字體沒有縮小太多,所以更厚。此外,這個版本的長處還在於除瞭莎翁全集之外,書本前麵還收錄瞭4-5篇重要的莎士比亞研究文章,極具參考價值。

梁實鞦平生主要有三大成就:一是文學創作與文學評論,他齣版的散文、小品、雜文集多達20多種;二是編纂英漢詞典,他編寫瞭30多種英漢字典、詞典及英文教科書;三是翻譯《莎士比亞全集》,這也是耗時最長、用精力最大的一項工程。可以說梁實鞦不愧為一代文學大師、翻譯大師。然而,新中國成立後,梁實鞦的作品並沒有在內地繼續齣版,這是有曆史原因的。

梁實鞦是中國現代著名作傢、文學批評傢、文學翻譯傢。他1903年1月生於北京,1915年考入清華留美預備校,1923年8月赴美留學,專攻英語和英美文學。1926年夏迴國於南京東南大學任教,先後任暨南大學、青島大學、北京大學、北京師範大學等校外文係教授、係主任。1948年移居香港,1949年到颱灣,先後任颱灣省立師範大學、颱灣師範大學、颱灣大學教授、颱灣編譯館館長。1987年11月3日因心髒病病逝於颱北。
