Marina Lewycka was born in Kiel, Germany at the end of the war and grew up in England. She is the author of three bestselling novels: A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian, Two Caravans and We Are All Made of Glue.

　　书中言辞极其幽默俏皮，时不时给书中人物冠以的“离婚专家太太”，“战争宝宝”等绰号，腹黑地点到父亲与瓦伦蒂娜丈夫称呼彼此教名的《战争与和平》式的语言交流，风趣地展现女性各种表里不一的言辞，加上从头至尾夹叙夹议的描述，以及引人入胜的各种“战斗”情节，一步步让读者亲近英籍乌克兰移民曾经的过往岁月，最终明白，原来两姐妹南辕北辙的人生道路源于圣诞节的公车上“那个给妈妈六便士的女人”，从那时候开始，妹妹“变成了一个终身的社会主义者”，而姐姐则“变成了那个穿皮大衣的女人”。更重要的是发现，原来那从乌克兰来的“波提切利的出水维纳斯”瓦伦蒂娜是多么像我们身边那些追逐金钱、既狡猾又愚蠢的“外嫁新娘”，而她那个“他可以成为完美的妻子”的前夫又是多么理想主义的依然东欧化。

　　对于学习拉丁语的学生来说，这部词典是最佳的伴侣，因为“拉丁语—英语”的部分不仅包含动词的所有重要形式（如mitto, mittere, misi, missum），它还另外加上了动词的完成时形式（比如misi perf of mitto，即：misi为mitto完成时形式），为初学者提供宝贵的帮助，消除了查找单词来源的烦恼和困惑。每一词条的解释简明经典，而且这部词典回避“通过同源英语词解释拉丁语的单词”，比如拉丁语的occupatio被解释为taking possession，没有用英语的occupation。换言之，这部词典用很丰富的英语词汇来解释每个拉丁单词。在那些非常关键的单词那里也有一些搭配的词组，比如capio, capere（拿）：initium ~ （开始）。
