試舉一例，餘書“軍人第十一 吳佩孚”一節，講到： 　　“當擠在宣武門內象房橋國會廳裏爭吵不休的參議員和眾議員們擬拆除紫禁城三大殿 太和殿、保和殿、中和殿，在其廢墟上另建議會大廈時，吳佩孚通電總統、總理、內務總長、財政總長：“ 何忍以數百年之故宮供數人中飽之資乎？務希毅力惟一保存此大地百國之瑰寶。無任欣幸。盼禱之至！”當各報刊登載瞭吳氏通電後，頌揚吳帥之聲鵲起，抨擊國會之議潮湧，故宮三大殿幸免一劫。” 　　似乎國會議員們是如此地委瑣不堪，而吳玉帥又是如此地力排眾議、力挽狂瀾。其實呢？相關史料並不難找，餘世存卻視而不見： 　　1912年初，國會參、眾兩院從南京遷北京，在宣武門象坊橋前資政院舊址辦公。因場地狹小，漸不敷使用。1923年，政府秘密計劃將參、眾兩院遷往紫禁城太和、中和、保和三大殿，將三大殿改造成日常辦公及召開會議的場所，並委托瑞典建築師司達剋（Albin J. Stark）進行故宮三殿改造設計。 　　時吳佩孚駐節洛陽，聽聞此事，於5月20日緻電大總統黎元洪、內閣總理張紹曾、內務總長高淩爵和財務總長張弧，錶示反對。這種落差足以使他懷疑：曆史，它究竟懷有什麼不可告人的目的？難道它在耍我們？信念與懷疑夾雜，流諸筆端，就使得《中國男》這本書少瞭“卻顧所來徑，蒼蒼橫翠微”的從容大氣，而顯得逼仄怪異。
