自1889年以來，全世界的韆剋定義基準都是保存在巴黎秘密地下室內的一個鉑-銥閤金圓柱體。這是最後一個仍依賴於物理實體的測量單位。但韆剋之源本身的質量正在變小，這促使國際度量衡大會於2011年決定將韆剋和量子力學常數掛鈎，進行重新定義。重新定義過程涉及自然科學界最為復雜睏難的測量，在2017年，這些工作已經進入瞭最後階段。
