Ⅱ.The Norman Conquest and the M iddle Ages
About 787 the English began to be troubled by the Danes, who at first came only onplundering the country.Gradually, however, they came to make permanent settlement.KingAlfred the Great(849.90 1)succeeded in driving the Danes Off with force. The Saxon King,Alfred the Great, also known as"Father of the British Navy",gradually pushed the Vikingsnorthwards and eventually into the sea.A1fred'S statue can still be seen in Winchester(Hampshire),his old capital. But after his death the Danes once again occupied the country in1013.and held it for 30 years.
In 1 066,the French—Speaking Normans, under the leadership ofDuke William came into England and William was crowned as King ofEngland. It was called the NOlTnan Conquest. And the NormanConquest marked the establishments of feudalism in England. The chieffeature of the feudal society was distinct division into classes.mainly:landlords and peasants,Noblemen,Knights, bishops, archbishops, abbots. The ruling class held most of the land. The peasants toiled allthe year round and paid rent to those gentle folks in grain, service orcash, with little left to sustain.
After the year 1 066,the next episode most people remember is the Crusades. These werea series of wars in which armies from all over Eurooe tried tosnatch the"Holy Land"(1.e.Palestine,where Jesus Christonce lived)from the"Infidels"(i.e.the Muslims).TheCrusades remind US that Britain even at that time was aChristian country. Each village had its church, and many ofthese Norman.style churches are still standing.Indeed, theChurch was extremely powerful in those days, and the Pope inRome who could always inspire the fear of eternal damnationby expelling from the Church a king or even a whole nation, wielded great political power over the whole of WesternEurope.
